In November 2008 Leyla Welkin Ph.D. formed a research team with two Turkish psychiatrists Prof. Dr. Selcuk Candansayar MD and Associate Prof. Aslihan Sayin MD in Ankara, Turkey. The mission was to conduct research and develop educational programs, creating therapeutic groups and services for women in Turkey. The fundamental goal of this mental health and education team was to encourage positive experiences of sexuality and femininity in Turkey.
Five Trauma Treatment Therapy Groups were completed working with adult women survivors of sexual abuse. Quantitative and qualitative data was gathered and two scholarly articles have been written and are in the process of publication.
Other programs include Positive Sexuality Workshops for young adult women. These workshops offer women an opportunity to explore possibilities for experiencing femininity and female bodies as a source of joy, creativity and pleasure rather than burdensome, risky and problematic.
Training and Consultation Services are available to shelter houses, women's counseling center workers legal advocates, and other social service workers interested in increasing the effectiveness of their work with survivors of family and sexual abuse. These services are offered on a fee for service basis or for a token fee to agencies based upon the ability to pay.
All of these programs involve training mental health and health care providers, social workers, victims advocates, legal, education and religious professionals. Programs train to improve individuals' skill levels for working with Gender Based Violence. The Fundamental goal is to support the Development of a Community based Systematic Service Network to Protect, Prosecute and Prevent sexual abuse and family violence everywhere.
Programs in Turkey are linked to training and consultation in the United Kingdom and United States to help create International Inter-Cultural Networks of Service Providers. This kind of inter-cultural collaboration improves the skills and understanding of all.
